69,000-Acre Lake - In the Heart of the Lake District

Several national fishing publications have named our area on the Tennessee River one of the top bass lakes in the nation. And it's even hosted the National BASS Master's Tournament. You can do everything from lounging on your pontoon boat, slicing through the water in your personal watercraft, or show off your slalom ski skills on our beautiful, friendly lake.

Goose Pond Colony Resort

A stunning 360-acre complex offering a 16-mile view of the Tennessee River. Public & Private Hunting Preserves
The season is long, the scenery amazing, and the variety of game impressive. Waterfowl and whitetail deer are plentiful, while you can also try your aim at other abundant game, including quail (included on the Alabama Quail Trail), dove squirrel, rabbit, and turkey.

Russell Cave National Monument
Located in Bridgeport, the only national monument in Alabama sits at the end of a 12-mile hiking trail surrounded by 310 acres of pristine woodlands. Guests are invited to take a guided tour or permits are available to visit deeper parts of the cave. Admission is free. Having more caves per square mile than any county in America, cave explorers from all over the world come to visit Jackson County's other 1,500-charted caves.

Buck's Pocket State Park

A 2,000-acre wild world that runs along the west side of Sand Mountain. Avid hikers will get their thrills climbing to the peak of Point Rock and looking down into the 800-foot Buck's Pocket Canyon. For more information, call 256-659-2000.

 

Pisgah Gorge
The Gorge's three beautiful waterfalls are set against a background of scenic hiking trails. The Gorge is particularly striking in the spring and fall, when wildflowers, changing leaves and our famous Rhododendrons make the fabulous landscape even more dramatic.
 

Unclaimed Baggage Center
Located in Scottsboro, you will find a truly unique store with contents of lost and unclaimed luggage from all over the world - all for sale at a fraction of their original value. The serendipitous collection of goods (over 7,000 new items daily) includes cameras, adult & children's clothing, jewelry, sporting equipment, luggage, and much, much more. First Monday Weekend Trade Days
Begun in the mid-1850' s, merchants plied their wares around the Court House in downtown Scottsboro. Each month of the year you can still enjoy First Monday "Weekend" Trade Days in our quaint, friendly town of 15,000. A unique blend of yard sale, antique show, arts & crafts, and flea market, attracts several thousands of people for this Saturday and Sunday event (Open Mondays in July and September. Scottsboro-Jackson Heritage Center
Open all year long. Housed in a splendid 1880's Greek Revival mansion known as the Brown-Proctor House, the heritage center complex now includes a museum, the pioneer village called Sagetown, a fascinating collection of Native American tools, Civil War memorabilia, and the 1868 Jackson County Courthouse. Stevenson Railroad Depot Museum and Fort Harker

 

A Union stronghold and fort during the Civil war, today the Stevenson Depot is listed on the national Register of Historic Places and houses artifacts of the lively trade, weary travelers, and bitter conflict brought to the area by the strategic location of the railroad. In June, an old-fashioned festival celebrates its railway heritage with parades, a street dance, story telling, clogging, museum tours, and other period entertainment.

Siege of Bridgeport Re-enactment

The largest re-enactment in Alabama is celebrated every March. Bridgeport brings history alive when hundreds of re-enactors thrill thousands of curious visitors and history buffs with their authentic re-creation (including cavalry charges and multi-cannons firing) of this fateful battle of the Civil War.


Annual Catfish Festival
Held the third weekend in May at County Park in Scottsboro. This annual festival will include a catfish tournament for the kids, arts & crafts show, lots of music and a Catfish Cooking & Grilling Contest.

Cathedral Caverns

Both Native Americans and Confederates soldiers used the cave as a refuge, and Disney used them as a movie setting for Tom and Hack. Near the town of Woodville, AL, Cathedral Caverns was designated as an Alabama State Park in August 2000. For tours and more information, call (256) 728-8193
